Arcos de las Salinas is a town located in the Gúdar – Javalambre region, in the province of Teruel, Spain. This picturesque town was known for the salmon trout that were raised in its fish farm and salt mines,

Some points worth visiting are the Ojos del Río de Arcos, birthplace of the river of the same name, as well as the Sierra de Javalambre, where you can admire spectacular high mountain landscapes, where Scots pine and creeping juniper predominate. , forming a unique landscape. Also noteworthy within the municipal area is the Pico del Buitre, where the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory (OAJ) is located, from where it is possible to observe magnificent views of the entire environment, and even of the Mediterranean Sea. In this observatory, the cosmos is studied at the highest level. Furthermore, in the town of Galactica, the Center for the Dissemination and Practice of Astronomy is located, where astronomical activities are organized for all audiences, to make this exciting science known to the public.

The town still preserves an old portal, that of Catarra, through which the town was accessed during the Middle Ages, as well as that of Teruel and Portillo.

The tower of the church of the Inmaculada, in Baroque style (18th century), which is declared a national artistic monument, stands out in the profile of the town.

For many centuries Arcos de las Salinas had an important salt trading activity, thanks to a salt water spring, whose water was dammed in ponds during the winter so that, in summer, when the water evaporated, the salt could be collected. Currently, the main economic activity of the town is livestock farming, and in the past also aquaculture, through a trout and salmon farm that existed in the Arcos River plain

For nature lovers, Arcos de las Salinas offers a magnificent natural environment, where you can find lush pine forests and peaks that reach 2000 meters, with spectacular alpine landscapes. As natural monuments, we highlight the “Las Dueñas” sessile juniper, whose dimensions, with more than 6 meters in diameter and 12 meters in height, are truly worth admiring.
